The Boys is the third Korean studio album (fourth overall) by South Korean girl group Girls' Generation. It was released on 19 October 2011 by S.M. Entertainment, distributed by KMP Holdings and digitally released on the same day. On 8 December 2011, a Version B edition, re-titled Mr. Taxi was released. The Version B featured "Mr. Taxi" as the lead song and featured the English version of "The Boys" as a bonus track. For the album, Girls' Generation reunited with Hitchhiker, who produced many songs for them such as "Wake Up" on their Hoot mini-album. Experimenting with new producer Teddy Riley amongst others for the title track led to the album being the debut American release of the group. Promotion was led by the release of an English version of the lead single on December 20, 2011. Under the distribution of Interscope Records, The Boys was released both physically and digitally with an expanded track listing on January 17, 2012. At the year-end award shows of 2011, the album won the Digital Daesang Award at the 26th Golden Disk Awards and 21st Seoul Music Awards. According to Gaon Chart, as of the end of 2011, the album has sold a cumulative total of 385,348 copies. The album topped the year-end charts of 2011.
